Internet forums have no shortage of creepy stories, many of which are crafted by creative writers that use just enough of reality to make things feel truly terrifying. The lore of The Backrooms captured the minds of many in the late 2010s and early 2020s, utilizing images and videos to depict spaces that looked familiar yet held terrible secrets. The Backrooms: 1998 is one example of internet stories coming to life in video games, and after enjoying some time in Early Access, the one-person developer Steelkrill Studio is ready to release the game in its full version. Here’s what we know about this exciting full debut for a new PC horror game that is also coming to consoles.
The Backrooms: 1998 is currently in Early Access on Steam and Steelkrill Studio is bringing the game to a full release “very soon” according to its publisher Feardemic. The game will come to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The full release will include achievements and improved visuals that feature enhanced textures. Additionally, improvements to the graphics and some bug fixes should make this the smoothest, most unsettling version of the game to date. If you’re played it already, there will be more scares to experience with updated jumpscares for various spaces in these horrifying rooms.
The game is based on a 4chan post from 2019 in which a single image showed a windowless, underground space with fluorescent lights. The lore of the post indicated that the Backrooms exist in a spacial anomaly outside of time and space which can be accessed by no-clipping out of reality. In the game, you freely roam, mark your path, find clues, find supplies, and unravel the story of The Backrooms. It’s highly reminiscent of Slenderman in its early days, relying heavily on internet fans of both the creepy and the creative stories folks weave out of this eerie fictional space.
